Boxed card assortments: what to check before buying

Two specifications decide whether a boxed set is good value, and listings routinely omit one of them.

What this covers

  • Card count and envelope count
  • Are the designs repeated
  • Blank inside or printed sentiment
  • Card size and envelope fit
  • Card stock weight
  • Finish and writing on it
  • Occasion balance in a mixed box
  • Value per card
  • Buying as a standby

Card count and envelope count

The number of cards is usually prominent. Whether envelopes are included, and whether there is one per card, is frequently not. A set of sixty cards with no envelopes is a very different purchase from sixty with, once you have bought sixty envelopes separately at retail.

Are the designs repeated

Assortments vary between all-unique designs and a smaller number of designs duplicated to make up the count. Neither is wrong, but if you send cards to a small circle who will see each other, repeats matter. Listings that say non-repeating are telling you something worth knowing.

Blank inside or printed sentiment

A printed greeting fixes the card to one occasion and one register of relationship. Blank cards go anywhere and require you to write more. Mixed boxes exist and are the practical choice if the set is a general standby rather than for a specific event.

Card size and envelope fit

Five by seven and four by six are the common American sizes, and both fit standard sleeves and organiser boxes. Unusual sizes look distinctive and become awkward to store and to post. Check the size if the cards will go into an existing storage system.

Card stock weight

Heavier stock feels more substantial and stands up on a mantelpiece, which is where most received cards end up. Lighter stock creases at the fold and curls in a warm room. Weight is not always stated, but where a listing describes stock, it is usually because it is good.

Finish and writing on it

Glossy and coated finishes resist ink and can smear, particularly with gel and fountain pens. Matte and uncoated interiors take handwriting reliably. If you write more than a signature, an uncoated inside is worth prioritising.

Occasion balance in a mixed box

A general assortment that is ninety per cent birthday cards is really a birthday box. If you want coverage across sympathy, thanks, congratulations and blank, check what the mix actually is rather than trusting the word assorted.

Value per card

Divide the price by the usable cards, not the headline count. Cards you will never send because the sentiment does not fit anyone you know are not part of the value. This calculation often reverses the apparent ranking between two boxes.

Buying as a standby

The reason to buy a box rather than single cards is to stop the last-minute trip. That only works if the box covers the occasions that actually arise and lives somewhere you will remember. A box in a cupboard you never open has solved nothing.

How this applies when you are buying

Two details decide whether a boxed set is good value: how many cards are in it and whether envelopes are included. Assortments are the efficient buy if you send cards regularly; blank cards are more flexible because you supply the message and they suit any occasion.

Boxed assortments, blank notecards and encouragement cards, with the card count and envelope status stated on every listing.
