What they protect against
Card fronts scuff against each other, pick up marks from handling and soften at the corners. A clear sleeve prevents all three during storage, display and transit. For anything being sold or given, it is the difference between finished and nearly finished.
Sizing with clearance
A sleeve cut exactly to the card is difficult to load without bending a corner, which is the thing you were trying to prevent. A small margin on the width and enough length to close is what you want. Listings state the sleeve size, so compare to the card rather than to the envelope.
Sleeving the card and envelope together
Most people sleeve the card with its envelope behind it, which is why sleeve sizes are quoted slightly larger than standard card sizes. If you intend to do this, size for the pair, not the card alone.
Resealable versus plain
Resealable sleeves have an adhesive lip and close securely, which suits retail display and posting. Plain sleeves are cheaper and fine for storage where the card is not being handled by strangers. The lip is usually on the sleeve rather than on the flap, so the card is not touched by adhesive.
Film thickness
Sleeves are sold by thickness in mils. Thicker film is stiffer and protects better; thinner film is cheaper and more transparent. Around two mils is a common middle ground that holds shape without adding noticeable bulk.
Clarity matters for display
If cards are being displayed for sale, clarity is part of the presentation. Cheaper film can have a slight haze or a texture that dulls colours. Where a listing mentions crystal clear film, that is what it is describing.
Food-safe use
The same sleeves are widely used for cookies and bakery items. If food will touch the sleeve, look for stock described as food safe rather than assuming, because not all cellophane and poly films are.
Buying quantities
Sleeves are consumed steadily and priced far better in hundreds than in small packs. If you have established the size you use, buying at volume is straightforward economy. Buying volume before confirming the size is not.
Storage of the sleeves themselves
Keep them flat and out of sunlight. Film left in a warm sunny place can become brittle or the adhesive lip can lose tack. Stored sensibly they last indefinitely.
How this applies when you are buying
The reason a card drawer becomes a pile is that cards are not a uniform size and stack badly. An organiser with occasion dividers solves the sorting; sleeves inside it solve the scuffing. Check the stated capacity against how many cards you actually keep, which is usually more than you think.
Organiser boxes, binders and albums with dividers, sized for standard American greeting cards.
